How We Pick Kitchen Gear

Updated

This page explains how a product ends up recommended on KitchenGearCalc, so you can judge how much weight to give a pick. In short: we compare manufacturer specifications, owner manuals, published standards and recurring themes in verified owner reviews, and we do not claim to have tested the products ourselves.

What we compare

  • The specification that does the work. For a sous vide circulator that is wattage and bath capacity, for a vacuum sealer it is seal bar length and whether the machine has a moist mode, for an espresso machine it is how the water is heated and whether it can hold temperature.
  • Whether the numbers match the category. A duty rating, a pressure figure or a power step count is checked against the manual, not the marketing line.
  • Serviceability. Whether a gasket, pad, probe or part can be replaced rather than the whole appliance.
  • Recurring owner reports. Problems that show up repeatedly in verified reviews after months of use count for more than a single first-day review.
  • Price against the alternatives. We show a budget range and say when a cheaper model does most of the job.

Where the information comes from

Manufacturer specification pages and owner manuals, the Amazon listing, and published standards such as USDA FSIS safe minimum internal temperatures. Safe temperatures are quoted as published and are never rounded. Calculated figures, such as sous vide come-up time, are labelled as the output of a stated model. Where a number is not published by a source we trust, we leave it blank.

What we have and have not done

Nothing here comes from cooking test batches or running instruments in a kitchen of our own, and each page says so. The method is good at catching what specifications reveal and marketing hides, and poor at telling you how an appliance feels to use or how loud it is. That limit is stated on the About page.

Affiliate links and the word "sponsored"

Most buy buttons are Amazon affiliate links. If you buy through one we may earn a commission at no extra cost to you. Those links carry rel="sponsored", which is the standard label for affiliate links and does not mean a brand paid for the recommendation. We do not sell ranking positions, and a brand cannot pay to change a pick. If a brand ever pays for a post, the page will say so. See the affiliate disclosure.

Prices, stock and updates

Prices change often, so pages show a budget range and the button shows the live price. Each product is confirmed against the live Amazon catalog; if a listing disappears the pick is replaced or named without a buy card. Every page shows its last-updated date under the title.

Corrections

A wrong time, temperature or spec is the most useful thing you can report. Send it through the contact page with a source, and we will check it and correct the page.
